I Wouldn’t Call it So Much “Buyer’s Remorse” as “Buyer’s Confusion”

Last week I found a beautiful Nanette Lepore dress at TJ Maxx for a killer deal. (That doesn’t mean it was cheap.) I told myself I wouldn’t buy it – it really is too expensive for my taste and paycheck. But I carried it with me to the register anyway. My thought process was: I’ll just inquire about a discount. You know, see if the sales clerk could tell me possibly when the dress might get an additional discount.

Our conversation went something like this:

Me: “I’m just wondering, is this dress going to be marked down any more?”

Clerk: “I’m not sure, but I can ask a manager.”

(He walks away briefly, speaks with a manager and comes back)

Clerk: “This piece just came in so we’re not sure when it’ll be marked down.”

It doesn’t exactly sounds like a sales pitch, but the next thing I heard coming out of my mouth was “I’ll take it.”

Why did I do this? I clearly can’t be trusted to make conscious and rational decisions when faced with the prospect of never seeing a beautiful, perfectly fit, brand name yet seriously discounted dress again. So I have decided to solicit the help of my friends and readers.

Question: Should I return the dress? And if so, what should I do with the money?

I should probably SAVE it, but I’d like to hear your thoughts regardless.

Additional facts: Original price was $400, I paid $150. And it looks good on me (a relative statement, but see for yourself below). I have about 20 more days to return it. Also, I took these pictures late, hense the hat to hide the face - and to focus on the true issue at hand: the dress. Not my face at 11 p.m. on a Wednesday night.

Also, I contemplated texting Noelle for help, but figured it was too late in the moment, and also remembered that the other Noelle I know would be very proud of my Nanette Lepore purchase. That may or may not have been additional purchasing incentive.

totally depends on the shoes. what are you wearing with it? can't make a decision without the shoes. whatever you do, don't soil the good name of nanette lepore by carrying a fake bag with this.

and anyway, you look good in anything - if i were you i'd just wear bikinis everywhere.

KEEP IT. You're single, and someday when you're married, you'll look back and say, dang, I remember when I was single and I could buy anything I wanted. I wish I could enlarge the pictures to see the dress better, but from what I can see, you look great in it.

Keep the dress. It's beautiful and you are hot. You are single, so enjoy the splurge. Seriously. Keep it.

I have these dilemmas as well. Usually if I see something that I want that is expensive and not really necessary, I take a moment to think it over, if I still want it, I just go ahead and buy it. Thus I end up with a bunch of sports team jerseys that I love. Keep the dress.

Keep It!! You will always remember the splurge. I have just such a memory with your mother, I ended up wearing that dress to my wedding shower, to the temple to get married and to a couple swank functions as a newlywed, money well spent!!

Wanna know a secret? I bought a Nanette Lepore skirt last Saturday at the RACK. No joke. It was a third of the price. I'm keeping it, and so should you! (I love her perfume too, have you tried it?)

So this is the dress...

Let's be honest, if you mentioned it to me the other night AND you're blogging about it to ask others their opinion, it means deep down you really want it and you're trying to justify. Let me assure you, there's no need to justify. It's gorgeous and it looks great on you. Like those before me, I say keep it!

I was once in a similar position--only the store was not TJ Maxx, the price was not marked down, and I had Caroline & Laura in tow. After a few minutes of deliberation, we concluded that I did, in fact, need that full-price Nanette Lepore dress from the Nanette Lepore store in Caesar's Palace. Said decision has never been reflected upon with even the lightest shade of regret. Hence, I'm really in no position to encourage a return.
