New Year's Eve 2011

On New Year's Eve I will drink a Diet Coke (my first one all year)...

and...

GET MARRIED!

 Hooray for marriage!

We finally set a date, and are now 65 days away from saying "I Do." I never thought I'd be that short-engagement type, but as it turns out, as soon as you decide to get married, you just want to get married. And, because it's on New Year's Eve, my colors will be "sparkles." It will be like my golden birthday all over again! Although I hope it's less gaudy.

Also, after hitting a few dress stores in the DC area, I have found virtually none that work for me. My mom and I have decided on taking an emergency trip to Utah next weekend and hopefully I will be able to Say Yes to the Dress. Any suggestions for the best bridal salons in Utah? C'mon ladies, I need you on this one...

Yahoo!!

And the best bridal boutique in Utah, in my opinion, is Alta Moda:

Allyce's is fine, but everyone has dresses from there.

I rented mine from Gowns by Pamela - you put your own dress together from rental pieces they have, and you don't have to store/move a dress for the rest of your life. And they really keep up with current styles. Love them.

So awesome! Getting married in Columbus? Short engagements are the best

Hey Steph!

I was just about to tell you about Alta Moda in Utah but Macy beat me to it. :) I loved the dresses there, but most of them take months to order, especially if you need to do alternations--so watch out for that. They have some fantastic dresses, though!

I ended up having my dress made by a woman named Roya who owns a dress shop in Old Town Alexandria (Myhoa Polk (now Baird), Sharri Hollist (now Morley) and I have all went to her). She is awesome to work with on a deadline and understands the need for temple-appropriate dresses.
Here is her website:

Hope that helps!!

Steph! I am so excited for you! Check out Kathleen's Bridal in Kaysville. That is where I purchased my dress and I had such a fantastic experience!

YEAH!!!!! NYE will be so fantastic. Where are you guys getting married? Please tell me Ohio, I will be there until the 1st! Alta Moda is a fantastic spot, much more fashion-forward than Allyce's Bridal (if you buy a dress from Allyce's I will be disappointed!). The Bridal Shop in SLC is really cool, I have had multiple friends get dresses there. You will likely have to get them altered, but they are really good about it and the seamstress is super talented. They have some modest ones too.

I think my sister-in-law got her dress at The Perfect Dress and it was really pretty. Some of these places you have to have an appointment, so keep that in mind. http://www.theperfectdress.com/index2.php

I hate that I know so much about weddings......that's what happens when you are a bridesmaid 10 times. :)

So happy for you! I know your trip is probably a rush trip, but if you have some time or want some company looking for dresses I would love to come!

Thanks everyone for the REALLY helpful advice and suggestions!

The wedding will be in Columbus, Ohio - forgot to mention that.

Meghan - Jeanette and I went to Roya the other day and we are both obsessed with her. I think having her make a dress for me is my backup plan, I am just really nervous about having a dress made with so little time to make changes.

Fajen - I will let you know when we're shopping in Provo, I would LOVE to have you there!

I have opinions on this subject.

I went with Alta Moda. Yes, Alta Moda has a nice selection, but they are pushy and rude and dishonest and work you over for every penny. The dresses they can get in on short notice are polyester and made in China, which is fine, unless they tell people the dresses are made in London which is just a lie. Many of my friends have had very strange experiences. After visiting so many shops in VA where they would tell me flat out there was nothing they could do with less than 6 months notice, it was a breath of fresh air to hear Alta Moda's "we can do whatever you want" attitude. But overall, sour taste.

Two better options:

1 -- Melissa Blackburn is a genius dressmaker. Three of my friends have used her in the last year and her work is stunning.

2 -- Avenia Bridal, specifically Nancy. She is talented and easy to work with. She can make your dress from scratch or tweak something they have in stock. I was impressed by them overall. The website is super cheesy.

Ahh good luck!! Tons of work ahead for you. You can do it. :-)

the perfect dress in cottonwood heights in the salt lake valley is really great. i found my dress on my second try-on, and i know several other people who've gotten pretty dresses there.

Congratulations!! Being married is the best! I have friends who are friends with this shop owner: http://www.gownsbypamela.com/real-brides

She rents (or I think you can keep it) wedding dresses, but allows you to design your dress yourself. Maybe worth a check into.

Who cares what your dress looks like when your colors are SPARKLES! And if it's anything like your golden birthday it will be awesome. AND, Adam won't have to participate on skype. LOTS of love!

i love the stuff at hannalore's in old town alexandria. except, you know you have to deal that nose-in-the-air type attitude. my vote is to have it made. whatever happens, you'll know it's yours when you put it on....it's just that "this is it" feeling.

what a great date to get married!
love,

Well, you could go my route, and come to NYC and have it custom made for you less than 2 months before the big day because you couldn't find anything else you liked.
